Poke Your Heart Out… with Candy Corn Cake

Confession time: I am obsessed with candy corn. And, as you already know, I am also a big fan of cakes and baking. So, when I saw a recipe for candy corn poke cake, I immediately knew I had to make it. And it turned out that it was actually the first opportunity that Alexis and I have ever had to bake together! It was lots of fun. This cake is very easy to make, but it involves a lot of time in the fridge, so plan ahead! If you want to have it at night, make it that morning. But it’s delicious and kids (and kids at heart) will love “poking” the cake! Totally worth the extra time – about 1 hour to make and 6 hours in fridge.

Ingredients:

  • IMG_2355Box of white cake mix
  • Orange and yellow food coloring
  • 14 oz condensed sweet milk
  • 1 container whipped topping
  • 1 bag candy corn
  • Baking spray
  • Straw or something else to poke holes

Instructions:

  1. Make the cake batter as per the instructions on the box, then divide equally into 3 bowls pans.
  2. Use food coloring to make one bowl’s batter orange and another’s yellow. Don’t do anything to the third one.

  3. Spray a 9×13” pan, and then evenly distribute the yellow batter across the bottom. Lay flat in the freezer for 20 minutes. Put the orange and white batter in the fridge.
  4. Take out the pan and add the orange batter on top of the yellow. Use a spatula to make it even if you have to, but do not disturb the yellow layer. Put back in the freezer for 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to the temperature directed on the cake box.
  5. After 20 minutes, take the cake out of the freezer and add the white layer on top, again making sure not to disturb the bottom layers. Allow the cake to sit on top of the preheated oven for 20 minutes.

  6. Bake for amount of time as directed on cake package. Once the cake springs back when you lightly touch it, take it out of the oven and immediately poke holes in it. Pour the condensed milk over the cake, trying to get some in each hole.
  7. Refrigerate for 4-6 hours.
  8. Take out of the fridge and spread whipped topping over cake, then sprinkle entire bag of candy corn on top. Then, get ready for an awesome Halloween treat!
